FNJD's action after the earthquake

The National Development Youth Federation’s actions through its network of solidarity to the CATASTROPHE victims. FNJD / RESOVICA

Phase I

Rescue

The FNJD, through its network, has mobilized 164 youths to go to the rescue of the victims of the January 12 earthquake that caused the death and disappearance of more than 360,000 people in the country, of which 78% were in the capital and its boroughs. These youths were mainly rescuers, doctors, nurses, engineers, facilitators, and technicians of all sorts. The FNJD, through its Network of Solidarity to Catastrophe Victims (RESOVICA), had started working two hours after the quake. We have pulled out 613 people from the rubble and evacuated more than 2000. We have also facilitated the opening of 6 clinics, 2 hospitals, and then facilitated the delivery of medicine and other materials to two centers. We have assisted around 110,000 people. We distributed 70,000 gallons of water, and processed 1478 people to hospitals.

We have an operation in the Champs de Mars called Clean-up Operation which consists of pulling out the dead from the area in order to prevent the spread of disease to the more than 50,000 people there. We have also facilitated the construction of two mass graves in Christ-Roi and Delmas 32 where most of the dead in those areas were buried.

Phase II

Victims’ Encampment Operation

From the first week after the quake we had already started organizing living quarters for people. The FNJD has put up 13 camps during the 8 days following the quake. We have also initiated a management system for these camps as well as committees to oversee them. Our census has allowed us to intervene in these camps more effectively concerning distribution of goods. These measures have attracted more camps under our umbrella; which today represents 50 camps housing more than 147,000 people. We have put up 7 mobile clinics, one of which with the help of KHALSA Aid and YouthHaiti. We have received medicine from the OMS as well. The Dominican Embassy has helped us by giving medicine, but also by facilitating the arrival of a delegation of FNJD in the Dominican Republic that brought medicine and other materials that had been sent there by our international partners.

Phase III

Management of the Camps

Today each camp has its own management committee. We have detailed information about the number of families, pregnant women, children and babies, and amputees who reside in each camp. We have 10 Tuff Tanks in the camps to stock drinking water. For the ones with no tanks, we find other ways to ensure that they have access to water. Sadly, some are left with no water due to the lack of support that we receive. We have solved the sanitation problems of certain camps but not all. We are in the process of implementing the construction of ecological toilets in the camps, a project that we were working on before the quake.

Perspectives

Actually, the FNJD is working on a Global Plan with the Fondation Espoir. This plan is the result of a partnership FNJD / Fondation Espoir under the label AJC (Action Jeunes Citoyens), through which we will work towards the realization of a number of projects. These projects have one objective: “The Reconstruction of the Country and of the Haitian Family”. In the mean time we are working on the moving of the people in our camps, and two other projects: “MWEN KONTE” (I Count) and the construction of ECOLOGICAL VILLAGES. We will innovate in the second one by using 65% of local construction material and by training a major part of the labor force on site. The goal is to build within international standards of ecological villages and by finding ways to make them less costly than what we find in other countries.

Conclusion

The best way to help us is to follow our ideals, as we have a very clear plan. We now need financial support to realize these projects and not food aid. We want a developed country, a proud people and a secure future for the upcoming generations.
